Internet of things and Internet of everything

Example

Imagine a smart hospital, which interconnects all its departments databases and all its hardware through a complex network. As a result, the system would not only be able to deliver the results faster, it could also evaluate them on many levels, not just, for example, from the cardiologist’s perspective, but also from an immunologist’s point of view. Furthermore, the system could predict the next test, book you an appointment best suited your pattern of visiting the institution. We are talking about algorithms so intelligent that they can predict what you need before you feel the need.

Aim

This large number of devices cannot send the data at the same time because the Internet connection could not handle the volume. The aim is to optimize the final router, in other words, the router you have at home, so that it collects only the currently relevant data. For example, when your child gets sick, it prioritizes task such as booking a visit at a doctor, informing the teacher that the child will miss its classes and your boss that you will be late for work. Hence, processes, such as downloading movies would automatically receive lower priority.

Evolution

The next step in the Internet Evolution is that it should include more and more services and human activities. It will not be long until even the Slovak health care, agriculture, and industry are fully digitalized. It is crucial that we know about this and are ready for it! Internet of Everything includes everything, covers everything, and will change everything.

Software-defined networking SDN

Large amount of devices connected to the Internet necessarily cause heavy traffic in it and, therefore, it is important to dynamically optimize it. The main principle of SDN is that a network no longer consists mainly of hardware but we try to replace as many devices as possible with software. The main advantage of this process is automation. For the customer and user this means that should he or she need to perform a change in the network, he does not have to send a worker anywhere to configure a physical device or replace any hardware. He can do all this through an application, which will configure all the devices in the network so that they are able to fulfill the new requirements.

Currently, the network estimates what activities will the user perform. Our aim is for the user to be able to tell the network what activities he will perform so that the network can adapt to his needs.

Network Functions Virtualization

Network Functions Virtualization is one of the tools that the SDN uses in order to achieve its goals. NFV is a structure of networks in which special network hardware parts, or active physical network devices, are being replaced by software devices. Thanks to this virtualization, network data can exist on PCs or Clouds. Devices virtualized in this way are called VNF – virtualized network functions. VNF is a running software or process, thanks to which not every network function requires its own unit of hardware. Essentially, you can configure most settings on the cloud servers through software, for example, a router, firewall, or Internet filter.

For example

A virtualized “session border controller function” can be used to protect the network and you do not have to install expensive and complex physical hardware, while the software (or process) fulfills exactly the same function as hardware would.

Virtual network

We can lower the running costs and complexity of a network, which would allow for a faster start of new services. We can connect our world-wide branches, or our field employees, through a virtual network. A further advantage is that a virtual network is fully automatic and you have full control over it through applications. It is very simple to change the security or prioritization of data.

OPNFV

Open Platform for Network Functions Virtualization is an integrated open source platform designed for products and services which use NFV. We cooperate with a large number of companies, service providers, and developers; while working on the development on this platform. Our aim is to speed up its adaptation and spread. Since there already are various NFV blocks on the market, the OPNFV project tries to coordinate their development, mutual integration, testing, and, at the same time, develop blocks currently missing on the market. The Pantheon Technologies‘ role is to participate in integration and testing

The Fast Data Project (FD.io)

A high-performance IO services framework for dynamic computing environments consisting of several projects aiming to satisfy growing demands of today’s cloud computing environments. FD.io utilizes already widely spread and highly modular Vector Packet Processing library by Cisco and implements DPDK capabilities favoring flexibility in packet processing solutions. It achieves acceleration in NFV and SDN through support of various additional projects. While developing high-throughput, low-latency and resource-efficient IO services, FD.io remains hardware, kernel, and deployment (bare metal, VM, container) agnostic. Due to its unique dispositions and high adaptability its capabilities are expected to extend into additional areas and features including security and cloud solutions.
