When a global, tier-1 networking leader set out to build a next-generation cloud firewall, they faced significant development bottlenecks integrating the cutting-edge FD.io VPP data plane.
For seamless API compilation and maintaining rapid prototyping, they partnered with us - the open-source networking veterans at PANTHEON.tech.
By embedding our specialized Golang and VPP expertise directly into their deployment pipeline, we turned a complex data-plane dependency into a modular, production-ready project.

[The Challenge] Open-source dependencies in enterprise cloud security
Developing modern, ultra-fast cloud firewalls requires leveraging high-performance data planes like FD.io VPP.
But bridging the gap between raw open-source repositories and a highly structured corporate security environment presents a significant challenge.
The client's internal engineering team struggled with continuous upstream changes in the VPP API, which repeatedly broke their custom wrappers.
Without dedicated tooling, generating binary API bindings in Golang became a highly manual, error-prone bottleneck that stalled their entire development velocity.
Also, integrating these data-plane components with discovery tools required deep, multi-protocol, SDN architecture domain knowledge.
Every upstream update threatened backward compatibility. The client needed an agile partner with a proven track record in designing complex systems using protocols like ALTO, PCE/PCEP, BGP-TE, and many others to stabilize their platform.
Our Approach: Open-source integration and Go development
PANTHEON.tech stepped in with deep SDN development experience working with enterprise networking giants.
Our primary strategy centered on stabilizing the open-source pipeline, writing comprehensive documentation, and transforming raw code into a plug and play architecture.
1. Automating the GoVPP binary API pipeline
We initiated continuous updates to the GoVPP binary API generator, to track upstream VPP API modifications automatically.
This eliminated manual code rewrites, allowing the build pipeline to compile new Golang API bindings automatically - without human intervention.
2. Ensuring discovery and transport verification
Our engineering team implemented continuous verification processes for the GoVPP transport library. We made sure that signaling and service discovery remained completely synchronized, stabilizing the runtime network orchestration layer.
3. Maintaining backward and forward compatibility
To protect the client's continuous integration (CI) environments, we designed an automated mechanism to maintain backward compatibility with FD.io VPP. This allowed for effortless API upgrades and prevented code breaking across branches.
4. Contributing back
We improved and refined the core VPP Golang API implementation for simpler system integration and drove the inclusion of VPPTop into the official VPP repository.
[The Results] Stability & speed in production
Our hands-on engineering intervention transformed a high-risk open-source dependency into an optimized, robust delivery machine.
Key Wins Included:
[Business] Accelerated time-to-market: Enabled continuous rapid prototyping and significantly shortened the release cycle of the flagship cloud-native firewall.
[Business] Internal domain knowledge expansion: Collaborated side-by-side with the client's engineers, embedding deep, long-term SDN and GoVPP architectural knowledge into their organization.
