[Case Study] Engineering an SDN solution for a global vendor

23/06/2026

From concept to reality

When a leading hardware vendor wanted to showcase the tangible business value of Software-Defined Networking (SDN), they faced a massive issue. How could they turn an abstract network protocol into a live and tangible demonstration.

PANTHEON.tech stepped in across multiple phases to bridge the gap between low-level network infrastructure and high-level user experience.

By engineering robust, custom daemons and a responsive Bandwidth Calendaring Application (BCA), we successfully transformed their vision into a fully integrated, production-ready reality.

[The Challenge] Proving SDN capabilities beyond the hype

In the early stages of the SDN evolution, telecommunication giants struggled to move prototypes out of the lab and into live environments. They lacked the production-ready protocols and user-facing software, required to prove that software could dynamically orchestrate hardware bandwidth.

Traditional corporate hurdles, including isolated development tracks and strict hardware dependencies, threatened their timeline for global showcases and conferences.

Manual network configuration bottlenecks meant that real-time provisioning for data-heavy applications, like video streaming, was virtually impossible.

To win market confidence, the client needed to demonstrate seamless connectivity on demand and video on demand (VoD). This required complex integration and an easy way to request and visualize automated bandwidth expansion on real-world network paths.

Our Approach: Agility, protocol deep-dives, and E2E integration

Our engineering team tackled this project by dividing the architecture into distinct, manageable splits across continuous Agile sprints. This allowed us to build the infrastructure from the protocol layer, up to the mobile application layer.

1. Building the SDN foundation

We developed and optimized the essential low-level network daemons required to handle dynamic traffic engineering. Our engineers implemented robust support for OpenFlow, BGP-TE, and RSVP-TE / PCCD.

2. Engineering the BCA

To calculate and schedule network paths intelligently, we integrated a two-layer routing algorithm, driven by a Path Computation Element (PCE). This formed the core logic of the Bandwidth Calendaring Application, enabling the network to predictively reserve, adjust, and optimize traffic routes.

3. Implementing ALTO support & UI visualization

Network visibility was crucial for both operators and demo attendees. We implemented full ALTO protocol support, together with an intuitive UI. This gave users a clear, visual map of network topologies and cost metrics in real time.

4. Constructing the mobile VoD ecosystem

To prove the business case, we designed a complete end-to-end user loop.

We built a custom Android video player application, that communicated directly with the SDN client library. When a user requested a high-definition stream via VLC, the app triggered an automated web service request to scale up network bandwidth instantly, ensuring buffer-free playback.

However, during our early integration sprints, the team identified packet-analysis gaps that threatened protocol stability. We immediately corrected this by deploying specialized debugging utilities. We engineered a custom Wireshark plugin, an rBGP Tool, and dedicated TCPDump components to ensure flawless data validation before the live events.

If your organization requires similar technical resourcefulness, you can leverage our specialized services to accelerate your roadmap.
